GOLDEN Project

Genetics Opportunity, Learning, Development & Empowerment Network

The GOLDEN Project is a partnership between the Howard University College of Medicine and the National Institute of Health started with the goal of increasing the number of black Genetic Counselors practicing in the field. I was brought on to the project to produce the introductory video content that would be hosted on the group’s website. I remotely produced these videos with black genetic counselors across the country, ranging from Maryland to Hawaii.

My process started with scheduling remote pre-production meetings, hosted on Zoom, with the participating counselors . On these pre-production calls, I assisted them in setting up proper lighting and camera framing in their recording spaces. Then the participant would join the Zoom call using their smartphone and I would record the meeting while they recited their speech for the website at my direction. My choice to have the participating counselors call in on their smartphones (mounted on a recommended tripod accessory) was to take advantage of the high quality cameras that come on modern smartphones. The standard webcam included on most laptops is a low quality camera, so I made the decision to have the counselors call in on their own smartphones to maximize the recorded video quality and to minimize production costs by using technology that the counselors already owned.

I then took the footage that Zoom recorded and edited it in Adobe Creative Suite to produce the final cuts that are currently hosted on the website. (Hyperlink Incoming)
